The House Under Pressure: Why 45% Of Americans Are Independent Voters
By Lisa Singer

The American House Under Pressure
President Abraham Lincoln once warned that "a house divided against itself cannot stand." As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, that warning feels more urgent than ever. The American house is under severe pressure. It is not just divided, but straining under siloed media, partisan gridlock, and an affordability crisis that makes the American Dream feel increasingly out of reach. While elected leaders remain locked in perpetual stalemate, the stability Americans depend on is being tested in ways we have not seen in generations.
INDEPENDENT HERO OF THE WEEK: Dr. Jackie Salit

Jacqueline "Jackie" Salit is a premier strategist and author in the American independent political movement. Currently a Professor of Practice at Arizona State University, she co-directs the Center for an Independent and Sustainable Democracy, where she leads groundbreaking research into the growth and impact of nonpartisan voters. Her work bridges the gap between high-level academia and grassroots organizing, focusing on structural reforms that challenge the traditional two-party duopoly.
Beyond her academic role, Salit has been a pivotal force in major political shifts, most notably running the Independence Party operations for Michael Bloomberg’s successful mayoral campaigns in New York City. A prolific writer and advisor, she serves on the board of the USC Schwarzenegger Institute and is a key voice for Independent Voter News. She is the author of Independents Rising and co-author of the 2023 book The Independent Voter, cementing her status as a leading authority on the evolving landscape of post-partisan America.
Her TEDx talk, titled "Independents, 40% of The Electorate: The Engine For a Post-Partisan Political Reform," was delivered at TEDxNewEngland.

Must Watch
We recommend Oprah's episode "Oprah and Experts: Setting Boundaries with Toxic Family Members" because it powerfully shows how extreme political division has driven family estrangements and rifts with friends, turning differing views into deep wounds. With raw stories and expert insights, Oprah explores this toxicity and offers hopeful guidance on boundaries, empathy, and possible repair. For independents willing to listen across the aisle, it provides an inspiring roadmap to bridge divides, model understanding, and heal fractured relationships. Proving personal courage can start the broader fix our nation needs.
